A Ruined Wedding
Chapter 53
A Ruined Wedding
The Royale Halls is one of the biggest halls in the chain of halls that RoyBen Hotels and Suites has and so, I gave the order that my wedding ceremony would be held there. As expected the hall was adorned with expensive things. The chandeliers decorating the roof of the hall stood magnificently high up. The wall has small hues of rainbow colours and a mixture of diamond, making everything sparkle. The drapes on each window was velvety, giving it a royalty vibe. White Roses, which is Myra's favourite, stood in big vases and was placed strategically in the room.
A giant altar, made with marbles stood in the room and occasionally, caught lights from the chandeliers in the room. Opposite it were rows of seats which belonged to politicians, business moguls and crime lords. I called everyone to allow them to witness my wedding and they knew better than to not show up, for the ceremony isn't merely about joining a man and woman together but also a place of social networking.
The entire area of the hall accommodates media persons who just want to get in and get a glimpse of the hall for it is the most anticipated wedding of the year.
I walked away from the doorway where I had checked everything and saw that it matched my taste and walked inside the hall. As I walked in, I received greetings and nodding from all of the guests which were handpicked by me and adjusted my tuxedo. I smiled happily because I knew the wedding was the beginning of great things that I had in mind to achieve.
The smile however turned to a frown as my eyes caught someone I hadn't thought I'd see in several years to come.
Percy King- the man whom I thought I had locked in the dungeon forever was walking freely in broad daylight and even attending my wedding
I stood still in the middle of the hallway as I watched him smile at me. The man who used to be my friend and one, whom I betrayed by implicating him and took all of his belongings for myself, was sitting pretty in my wedding ceremony. He was seated beside Carl and the two spoke in hushed tones as if they've known each other for a wine. Even though our eyes met, he wasn't uncomfortable at all. It was as if he was enjoying the show, seeing as I now had my hands clenched beside me in anger.
Instead of walking to the altar and waiting for the minister, I took a sharp turn and walked to Carl.
'If it isn't the man of the day," Carl said,he didn't say more than that but I knew he wasn't happy with me. First it was his daughter and then his bastard daughter. And now I want to marry the same woman who had saved his company. I could tell that he knew what I was after his company but there is nothing he could do about it. He has no evidence, all is speculation.
'Why are you here?" I asked Percy, as if I didn't hear Carl.
'Oh him? Percy here is my old friend. Don't mind the age gap but we go a long way. I decided to bring him to the ceremony, since Myra is like a daughter to me too," Carl said, even though I didn't direct the question to him
Masking my irritation with a smile. 'Didn't think I'll see you make entrance back to the society, how many years has it been?" I asked
"You do the counting, not me," Percy replied. He's still the same way I remembered him, always calm in the face of anything. 'Congratulations on this new journey," he said and bowed his head.
‘New journey,my foot!' I thought. I opened my mouth to ask how Carl got involved with Percy but I was stopped by the increasing sound of the piano stopped me.
My bride was making her entrance.
I took quick steps, making sure to get to the altar before her. I turned around and finally saw her. She looked clean, prim and proper in her long white wedding dress. To anyone watching, it was a perfect day for joining two lovers but I knew it was nothing but an illusion. This was all a game , one I intend to win.
Myra's eyes met mine as she got to the altar and she smiled sheepishly. How naive of her,if only she knew what plans I have for her,she wouldn't be too happy about the day. She got to me and dropped the sides of her gown she was holding earlier.
The entire hall had become silent too as the minister opened the book he had with him. He began a short admonition about living harmoniously in love and kindness. Finally,he finished his talks and was about to join us. I heaved a sigh of relief, it's been tough all through the previous months and now, I'm about to be relieved.
He had begun the joining ritual and was at the part where he asked if anyone objects to the joining when a tiny and feeble voice came through.
'I object!" Everyone in the room turned around and watched as an older woman walked in. She was dressed in a hospital gown and had her shoes in her hands. Her hair looked unkempt and was in a messy bun. She began to take deliberate strides towards the altar but the security men quickened their pace and met her half way but she wasn't having it. She fought back and when they still wouldn't let her go,she bit one of them on the arm and he groaned out in pain.
That gave her the opportunity she needed because she ran frenziedly towards us. By then, the whole of the congregation was already murmuring and wondering what was happening and who the woman was.
'She's a liar," she said and frowned. She had got to us then and walked close to Myra, scrutinizing her face. 'This isn't Myra! She's not my niece! This isn't her!" She added. I looked towards Myra who had disbelief written all over her face and tightened her grip on the bouquet of flowers in her hands that I thought would break under her skin.
The murmurings in the room had increased and sounded more like shouting now as everyone wondered what was going on. The media had finally managed to get inside and was taking pictures while others began to make live presentations. A bunch of security men burst into the room and carried the woman out of the room , she fought with all her might and all through, she kept shouting: 'She's a fraud, this isn't my niece."
I turned to Myra who was now shaking with fright from what I think to be the outcome of what just happened.
'Who's that woman? Did you know her? What does she mean by all that she said?" I poured out in a rush. The whole thing was disturbing and I needed answers to it.
'Answer me Myra? Who's she?" I half asked and half screamed. She didn't say anything, she only kept walking backwards, her face puzzled, with a range of emotions sweeping all over her face. In that instance, I knew she knew the woman and the fact that she wasn't saying anything meant one thing: she knew the woman more than anyone in the room and there was more to what the crazy looking woman was saying.
'Mr. Robben," came the voice of the minister. I turned to him and I could see that he too had been surprised by the turn of events.
'I'm sorry I can't proceed with the wedding, especially with the way things are. I advised that you sort everything out and schedule this for some other time," he said and without waiting for my reply, he turned around and left.
I looked around and saw that some of the guests were already leaving the hall, clearly disappointed by the unexpected turn of events. Even I, myself, am disappointed, my wedding_my plan just went down the drain because of a crazy woman!
