Chapter 59
Diane jerked a little. She acted scared by bowing her head and moving away from the angry Lucas. She silently counted to three, and soon her tears were welling down her cheeks, and she went back to him.
W-why can't you love me, Lucas?" she asked, slowly raising her head to show her crocodile tears, although she was really in pain for the same reason she questioned him.
Lucas couldn't love her. She could see through his eyes the madness he had for her. The way he clenched his fist and gritted his teeth.
She had already done everything for him to love her. She fixed her body to be the perfect woman men would adore, and she gave him the kind of fun in bed that Elyana wouldn't try to do because of her modesty, but Lucas kept choosing her.
Real tears of pain fell down her cheeks, yet Lucas didn't feel any sympathy for her; instead, he gave her a sharp gaze that brought shivers into Diane's system.
Diane felt that acting wouldn't bend him; she thought of another way, and she immediately kneeled in front of him.
W-why, Lucas? Why can't you love me?" She reached out for his hand, but he was still clenching; however, Lucas immediately pulled it away before she could barely touch him.
"Let me ask you that same question. Why can't you unlove me, Diane?" Lucas's voice was filled with disgust. Diane felt it in every word, and those were like daggers stabbing her already aching heart.
"You already knew beforehand that I could not love you, but why don't you want to stop? I was clear that my heart only belongs to Elyana, but why don't you want to leave us alone?" Lucas continued in the same tone.
Diane was speechless. Yes, she knew all those, but her heart didn't want to listen. She only wanted him; nothing could replace him.
Her tears continued falling. At that moment, she knew in herself that it wasn't an act anymore. She was truly hurting.
"Friends support each other for what I know, but you blackmailed me and ruined my life because you're selfish! I was clear I don't have feelings for you, Diane. For many years—for so many times I did tell you, Diane, but you weren't listening!" he paused.
Lucas took her silence as a chance to let out everything he wanted to tell her. Things he had been yearning to ask and say for a long time that he kept inside because he had no strength by that time, but his anger was pushing him already, and no one could stop that anymore.
"I was happy with my life—with my wife. I knew I wasn't perfect as a husband for her, but she still chose to stay by my side, not until you tricked me. You made me so stupid!" Lucas exploded.
His chest felt extremely heavy. He wanted to scream and break something, but he chose to remain calm rather than do something he would later regret.
He tried to calm down before proceeding, and after a few seconds, he said, "Do you have any idea how much I regret the day that I agreed to your scheme? You manipulated me and used that opportunity, and every time I remember that moment, I feel horrified and disgusted by myself!" Lucas could not hold back.
Diane raised her head after hearing Lucas' words, biting her lower lip to stop her chin from shaking. Just in time, Lucas walked further from her. She saw Lucas about to leave, but he stopped when he noticed a photo hanging on the wall.
It was Lucas and Diane. Diane was hugging him, and for what he remembered, it was taken during a pool party. They were still good friends at the time, and he hadn't met Elyana.
He shook his head as he recalled those fun and happy times, but he realized he did not know the person he considered one of his best friends.
Lucas became irritated after looking at the photograph for a second. His hatred for Diane resurfaced, prompting him to grab the frame and throw it against the wall. Diane flinched as the glass shattered, but what scared her the most was when he rushed back at her.
Lucas grabbed her by the chin. He lifted her head forcefully so that she could look into his eyes.
"You're the one who brought hell into my life. I know you know I came to see Elyana to try to win her back, and even if she said no already, I would still try and try until she came back to me," he told him firmly. "So, try hurting her, and I won't think twice about returning it to you threefold," he warned her before letting loose on her face.
Diane froze. It was the first time she saw him that furious. She stayed on her knees as he watched the departing man walk out of the door.
When he was completely gone, a grin slowly formed in the corner of Diane's lips. She wiped her tears and stood.
"We're not done yet, Elyana," she painfully uttered while trying to gain her balance.
Diane walked closely to the broken picture frame on the floor. She picked it up and shook it to try to get rid of the broken glasses. She started at Lucas's and uttered, "Do you think you can just get away from me like that?"
A devilish grin appeared on her lips. She placed the broken picture frame on the coffee table before heading to the bedroom. She grabbed a black purse and took out an orange bottle full of small, round pills.
Diane took two pills to drink but stopped in the middle. She walked into the bathroom, still holding the medicine bottle, and threw the two pills into the toilet bowl before pouring the other medicine into the same spot.
"I don't need those anymore," she murmured, pressing a button on the side of the toilet bowl to flush the medicines that were floating.
Diane heard the ringing tone of her cellular phone while inside the bathroom, but she did not seem to care. The phone stopped ringing after a while, and the caller waiting on the other line didn't dial the same number again and called a different one instead.
Lucas was already inside the elevator, going down to the lobby. His phone started ringing. When he took it to check who it was calling, he discovered it was Diane's father.
He immediately accepted the call, and the gentleman started speaking without waiting to say hello.
"Did you find her?" he asked Lucas.
"Yes, she's still inside the hotel room," he answered, and after getting that confirmation, Diane's father immediately ended the call.
Lucas's eyebrows met. The doctor seemed to be in a hurry, and he could hear many people in the background. As he reached the parking area and went inside his car, he took a little time to contemplate and calm his mind.
It was still Christmas, and he was thinking about where to go. Whether to his father's place first or to his mother, who had recently moved to a different house after deciding to ask for freedom from her husband.
He intended to go straight to his mother's place and not to his father's big house, where he knew that the only question he would ask was how the event was or how many of the businessmen he had met were willing to make a deal with them.
It would be far better in his mother's new home because, even though it was just the two of them and the space was insignificantly smaller than his father's villa, it was quiet and it felt more like home.
While he was on the road, an ambulance parked at the entrance of the hotel, where Diane checked. After some time, a private car followed through, and the one driving was Diane's father.
